Why should I have a website?

There are many reasons to have a website - to keep in contact and share your photos with friends and family, you might want to show off your crafts, or even sell them. Maybe you write poetry or stories and would like to share them with others. Those are just a few reasons to have a website.

How many pages will I need?

This depends on how much content your website will have. You might want to have an About Me page and a Contact page so visitors can email you. If your site is about your children, you may want one page per child. Maybe you will want a guestbook so visitors can leave you messages. It's always best to keep the content on each page to a minimum as too much can overwhelm the visitor.

How will my website be found?

Your website is found by sharing the web address (domain name) with friends and family. Also search engines send out friendly 'spiders' to roam the internet, taking information from your webpages and metatags so you'll end up listed in different search engines.

What are Metatags?

These are hidden in the HTML code which is used by search engines to provide information about your website such as keywords, descriptions and author information. Metatags are supplied with every website at no charge.

What is HTML?

HTML is the coding language used to specify how to display text and position graphics on a webpage.

What is hosting?

For visitors to find your website, the files for your site need to be on a server which is a computer connected to the internet permanently. This means that your site can be accessed anywhere around the world at any time.

TOP

Why should I pay for hosting when there are free webhosting servers?

Free servers will most likely have a banner or ad on the top of each page, or a popup on each page of your site. You are also limited in the amount of diskspace and bandwidth you are allowed per account.

TOP

What is diskspace and bandwidth?

Diskspace is the amount of storage allocated to each website. Bandwidth is the amount of data used when loading a webpage from the server to a visitor's computer. Each graphic, page or file uses up bandwidth for every page view.
